The ability to communicate with one another is essential for healthy living. Psychology Today states that “in communication, we develop, create, maintain, and alter our relationships.” How many of you have experienced times when communication has broken down with your family, friends, or co-workers?
One example of communication breaking down in my life is my sweet relationship with one of my aunts. Her dementia was worsening and it was beginning to make my visits to her memory care community more challenging. Historically we would have wonderful conversations about family, friends, and our artistic endeavors. This no longer became possible and I needed to be sensitive to her new needs so I had to find ways to adapt our communication How could I show love to the person who selflessly cared for so many others her entire life?
As an artist, she always expressed herself through her creativity. She inspired my artistic journey throughout the years. When my daughter was an infant, she gave me weekly oil painting lessons so I had a little “me-time” to express my creativity amidst the exhaustion of being a new mom.
One thing I learned about dementia is that it doesn’t affect your creativity! That was an AHA moment for me. So I began to bring a Connect and Color kit with me when I visited her. Side-by-side we sat and colored. I would always ask her for advice about my coloring. “Aunt Shirley, do you think these two colors go together?” She may not havebeen able to give me long explanations, but the sparkle in her eyes told me she still felt valued and appreciated. We had little conversations as much as possible, but the coloring bridged the gap for us. It was a non-verbal communication we shared and we were still making precious memories together. And you know what else, we were relaxing, as the worries of the day disappeared for a short time. Who couldn’t use that?
This is just one example of how Connect and Color bridges the gap and creates a greater sense of communication. Where do you have relationships that could use a little TLC? Whether you are visiting with the elderly, looking for a new family holiday tradition, or want a way to connect with your group this holiday season Connect and Color is just the solution.
You might be surprised to find loved ones saying “I haven’t colored in years. This is so relaxing!” as did a participant in one of our recent Connect and Color events. Wishing you many good memories this holiday season and a greater sense of commUNITY for all.
